Panorama’s undercover Liverpool nurse struck off

A LIVERPOOL nurse was last night struck off after going undercover for a television documentary to expose “appalling” standards at a hospital.

Margaret Haywood, of Everton, was said to be “devastated” by the shock decision of the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The 58-year-old carried out secret filming for a BBC Panorama programme, recording appalling conditions at the Royal Sussex Hospital, in Brighton.

But a panel in London yesterday rejected arguments Mrs Haywood’s actions were in the public interest.

Instead, chairman Linda Read said she breached the code of conduct and did not obtain consent to film “elderly patients in the last stages of their lives”.

Yesterday, her solicitor, Dr Karen Johnson, said Mrs Haywood was “devastated” and too distraught to comment.

She added: “There is an appeal process and while it is too early to say at this stage, it is certainly a possibility.”

After the ruling, Mrs Haywood burst into tears.
