Edge Hill university students given rape alarms and urged to drink water to cut sex attacks

FEMALE students are being kitted out with rape alarms and urged to drink water in between drinking rounds to cut the risk of sex attacks.

Women studying at Ormskirk-based Edge Hill university are also being urged to know their limits when it comes to drinking alcohol.

The Bottom of the Glass campaign is being run in partnership with Lancashire police and West Lancashire Community Safety Partnership.

It will be launched on Friday on the back of government figures which reveal a third of sexual assaults take place when the victim is under the influence of alcohol.

The scheme aims to encourage female students to take responsibility for the safety of themselves and the friends they drink with.

Students will receive credit card-size leaflets carrying a host of advice, including drinking water in between rounds, planning transport home before going out and never leaving mates on their own.

To bolster the safety of female students, they will also receive personal attack alarms which sound when a victim presses them.
