St Helens grandmother dies after confronting suspected supermarket thief

A MERSEYSIDE grandmother who died a day after confronting a suspected shoplifter in the supermarket where she worked was hailed a “one-in-a-million mum” by her devastated family.

Store supervisor Maureen Marsh, 56, tried to stop a man escaping from a Morrisons superstore in Baxters Lane, St Helens, on Saturday afternoon.

Some reports have suggested the brave mother-of-three grappled with the man and could have fallen and struck her head on the floor.

Yesterday, details of the post- mortem examination were being withheld by Merseyside Police as further tests were being carried out.

Her distraught son Steven, 32, said: "We are all absolutely devastated. Mum was a pillar of the community and everyone loved her. She was on first-name terms with hundreds of regular customers at the supermarket.

"She was due to go to Spain on holiday the night she died and she was really looking forward to it.

"It's cruel that she had to die like this. She was a one-in-a-million mum and she will never be forgotten."

Detectives are still questioning a man, 32, on suspicion of murder.
