“No-one will suffer financially,” he stressed, adding that workers will still receive their full severance package.
Franny Joyce, of Unite union, said he had expected the factory to close before May 8, but was still surprised to receive a call yesterday morning telling him it was closing that day.
“It’s down to the professional way the workforce have conducted themselves that they’re able to close early. They’ve just carried on doing their jobs as normal,” he said.
Frank Thompson, 49, who has worked at the factory for two years, said he had been getting messages all day from people shocked at the news.
