Athletics: Michael Bomba hammers down his opponents

LIVERPOOL Harriers’ Michael Bomba won the hammer event at the jumps & throws meeting held at Wavertree.

Bomba, who is fifth in the UK rankings, won it with 63.59m as clubmate Will Lowndes (58.13m) had to settle for second place.

Harriers’ Katarina Thompson also starred at the event with wins in the under-17s girls’ shot put and long jump. The 16-year-old heptathlete won the shot with 10.70m and leapt to 5.92m in the long jump. She was also third in the javelin (31.87m).

St Helens Sutton’s Tricia Spark won both the U15s shot (8.96m) and hammer (31.30m), while clubmate Lianne Bibby took the U15s javelin with a grade one throw of 30.31m.

Michael Causer completed a good day by winning the U15s boys’ long jump with a club record of 5.62m.

It was a busy weekend at Wavertree with the complex also hosting the Ernie Gallagher Memorial Meeting and the Tom O'Mahoney Open Track Meeting.

Southport Waterloo’s youngsters impressed with Joshua Hughes running a season's best 11.8 in the 100m and in the 200m he clocked 23.8.

Eleanor Newton won her U17s 300m hurdles race in 50.0 while Beth McBride was second in her 200m race (27.0) and Lucy Whitehead set a PB of 47.8 in the 300m. Danny Driver took third in the 100m hurdles with a PB of 15.3 and Ryan Williams ran a PB of 56.5 in the 400m.

Southport athletes were also in action at the opening Mid Lancs League match at Blackpool. Niall Cullen produced their best display to clinch the U15s boys 1500m in 4:37.4, while Michael Panes clocked 5:04 to take the U13s boys' 1500m. In the girls’ events, there were wins for Erin Donagh (U13s 800m), Sally Wareing (U15s 300m) and Katie Morris (U17s 300m).

Liverpool Harriers were the highest-placed Merseysiders in the ERRA National Relays at Birmingham’s Sutton Park.

The men were 22nd in the event thanks to Richard Burney, Graham Powell, John McCole, Ian Lawton, Colin Potts, Ricky Challinor, James Meldrum, Harry Harper, Rob Dewhurst, Laurie Luscombe, Alan Ashton and Anthony Clarke.
