BBC Gardeners World start filming at vandalism-plagued Wirral allotments

A WIRRAL allotment plagued by vandalism is to be featured on the BBC’s primet ime programme, Gardeners World.

Crew from the long-running gardening show were at Thornton Allotments, in Bidston, yesterday), before taking their “roadshow” into Birkenhead.

Thornton Allotments secretary Clive Ransom said filming had gone “really well” and he was looking forward to the segment being broadcast in a few weeks, probably May 15.

Mr Ransom had invited the BBC to the allotments after it had been hit repeatedly by vandalism, undoing the work of the gardeners, and many people had abandoned their plots at the site.

He said he hoped the publicity will help in his efforts to get funding for improved security at the site.

He said: “The support and encouragement from Joe Swift, the Gardeners World presenter, has been phenomenal. If we can now get more people interested in this site, that would be great.

“Anyone who is interested in saving money, getting outside and some exercise and knowing where their food comes from should try an allotment.”
