EUROPE'S largest glass making and bottling factory, built without planning permission in Cheshire, has been ordered to stop work and clear the site.
Cheshire West and Chester Council yesterday issued an enforcement notice against Quinn Glass.
However, details of the notice – including the timescales for complying with it – will not be made public until it has been served on the company’s Irish headquarters, and could be several days.
The Fermanagh-based company employs more than 600 workers at the site in Elton.
Two weeks ago, CWAC Council was ordered by a top judge to take enforcement action against the company.
Construction of Quinn Glass Ltd's giant factory on the former site of a power station at Elton was completed in 2005 – but still there is no planning consent in place, London's High Court heard.
Judge David Mole, QC, agreed with a local resident that it would be "disgraceful" if Quinn Glass was allowed to escape the consequences of the multi-million-pound risk it took.
The council’s notice complies with the order of the High Court requiring the removal of unauthorised buildings on the site of a former power station.
A planning application to regularise the existing development, submitted by Quinn glass to the former Chester City Council, remains to be determined by the new authority.
