CONTRACTORS are being sought to carry out the long-awaited extension of Liverpool’s Edge Lane dual carriageway.
Liverpool Council is to advertise for expressions of interest in the Official Journal of the European Union for the £25.6m scheme to widen the west end of the road.
It comes after campaigning grandmother Elizabeth Pascoe lost her battle with city authorities to save her home and stop the scheme in the High Court last month.
Alongside the widening of Edge Lane West to improve traffic flow from the city centre to the M62, it is envisaged that 280 new houses, a new medical centre and shops will also be built.
Advertising for expressions of interest is the first step in work starting on the scheme.
Last night, local ward councillor Liam Robinson said: “It is pleasing to see that there is beginning to be some progress, because the situation is starting to blight the area.”
In December, it was revealed that delays and the under-estimation of costs meant the road scheme would cost £9.5m.
