St George’s Hall is centre of celebration for St George’s Day festival
ST GEORGE’S Hall will be the focus of Liverpool’s celebrations for England’s patron saint today.
St George’s Day festival activities at the refurbished Grade I-listed building will include traditional Morris dancing and a live recital of Pomp and Circumstance, played by Professor Ian Tracey on the hall’s organ, the third- largest in the UK.
Celebrations will begin at 10am, when the Friends of St George’s Hall will welcome visitors by issuing red roses in the heritage centre.
From 2pm to 5pm, there will be a tea dance held in the Great Hall.
Admission costs £2, with entrance for the event at the William Brown Street end of the building.
At 3pm, the Mersey Morrismen will put on a display of Morris dancing to live music.
Cllr Tina Gould said: “St George’s Hall is the spiritual home for the biggest events and celebrations in Liverpool and the perfect place to celebrate St George’s Day.
“This is a great programme which celebrates the real meaning of Englishness and will provide visitors with excellent value for money.’’
Outside the hall yesterday, passers-by had mixed feeling about St George’s Day.
