A FAMILY who could become the first in the UK to have three heart transplants among them last night urged people to join the organ donor register.
Stephen Moffat, 12, and his sister Rachael, seven, needed transplants after tests revealed they both had restrictive cardiomyopathy, it was reported yesterday.
Their parents had become concerned about the children’s health after Stephen collapsed twice, and Rachael was constantly tired.
Stephen’s operation was carried out at the Freeman Hospital, in Newcastle, in November, 2007.
His sister had to wait longer for a donor, and her operation was carried out last August. Both are now in good health.
Now their father Andrew, 45, has been told he will need a transplant for the same hereditary condition.
He has had problems with his heart since childhood and was taken to hospital with heart failure in January.
