A COUPLE have celebrated their ruby wedding anniversary at the place where it all began – on a ferry across the Mersey.
Ron Millington, 61, then of Litherland, now of Woking, organised the special treat for his wife, Jennifer, 40 years after he first proposed to her.
A perfect day was topped off by Champagne and an invite on to the bridge from Royal Iris Captain Peter Carroll.
Jennifer, formerly of West Derby Road, said: “It was a wonderful gesture, but Ron has always been a romantic type.
“We were students working at a holiday camp in North Wales when we met and Ron proposed to me after just three weeks.
“We were on the ferry at the time because I was taking Ron home to meet my parents. I was a bit surprised at the proposal, but had no hesitation in accepting.”
The couple were joined on the trip by 60 friends and relatives who had come to Liverpool from all over the country.
Business consultant Ron said: “I’ve been a very lucky man, but when I first set eyes on Jennifer I knew we would marry.”
