Parking charging in Liverpool nets council £2m a year

The release of information comes as the city continues its inquiry into proposals to extend parking charging from 6pm to 8pm, to raise an additional £60,000 a year.

Frank McKenna, chief executive of DLIB, said: "Something must be done before the situation becomes too bad to repair by simply changing the city’s parking policy."

Cllr Anderson said: "It proves for once and for all that the argument put forward by the council that parking charges are for traffic management and safety is not true. We should be looking at ways of decreasing charges to encourage more people to come into the city."

A spokesman for the city council said: "All the surplus is ring fenced for transport schemes. The charges are part of a balanced parking policy to help traffic management."

Projects funded through the profit included upgrading the council’s Mount Pleasant car park, and new pay and display equipment.
