Oil firm copters back in service

OIL firm BP resumed its use of Super Puma helicopters yesterday following the North Sea crash in which 16 people died.

The aircraft were grounded earlier this month on the orders of the European Aviation Safety Agency to allow safety inspections to be carried out.

One of the models – the AS332L2 – crashed off the Aberdeenshire coast on April 1 with the loss of all 16 on board, including James Edwards, from Liverpool.

Another model – the EC225LP – ditched in the North Sea 125 miles east of Aberdeen earlier this year, with all 18 on board surviving.

A BP spokesman confirmed that all the safety checks had been completed on the helicopters and flights had resumed yesterday.

The company was using CHC and Bristow for operations, he said, but not Bond, which operated the helicopter involved in the fatal crash.
