SEFTON council last night admitted things could have been done differently to help a vulnerable three-month-old-baby who died in the care of her drug addict parents.
The couple had more than 150 drug convictions between them but, despite repeated warnings about their suitability as parents, the infant – known only as child A – was left living with them.
The “serious case review” into her death criticised public bodies for not sharing vital information that could have prompted further action.
Calls are also being made for similar reports to be made public faster in future.
Child A was found dead after sharing a sofa with her mother in 2005 in their one-bedroom flat.
But, even though the report was finalised in May, 2008, it was not widely seen by councillors until January this year. A Sefton Council spokesman said: “We have had a good, hard, look at the way issues were handled around the time of Child A’s tragic death in 2005 – and it is clear, with hindsight, that some things could have been done differently.
“This case was well publicised at the time and has been highlighted again because of a recent in-house report to update our elected members.
“The report talks about the steps we have since taken to improve our services for children and young people, and how we hope to ensure that every possible measure is in place to safeguard vulnerable children in the borough.”
