St Helens College principal vows to speak for region

A MERSEYSIDE college principal has vowed to ensure the region’s voice is heard after being appointed president of a leading teaching association.

St Helens College principal Pat Bacon made the pledge after she was unveiled as the Association of Colleges’ new president.

The association promotes the interests of colleges and aims to maximise funding for its members. And Mrs Bacon said she would strive to ensure that regions, including Merseyside, could “work together” with members nationally.

Mrs Bacon, at the helm at St Helens College for seven years, said it was too early to talk about specific policies, as the association was in the process of drawing up a manifesto but issues on her radar included cuts in college budgets.

College and school bosses fear they may have to turn students away, after the Learning and Skills Council wrongly suggested extra cash would be available.

The Government has now stepped in and promised £250m this year to provide extra places.
