Plans work for Rainhill

RAINHILL’S second bid to establish themselves in the Business Assistance Liverpool Competition is going far better than their first attempt.

In 2007 the Recreation Ground side were relegated to the Merseyside and Southport Cricket Alliance after just one season.

This time Mike Rotherham’s men sit in a very healthy third place going into tomorrow’s home game against Maghull.

“We didn’t expect this start but of course it helps to have had experience of the Competition a couple of seasons ago.” said Rotherham, who points out that his team would have finished ninth that summer but for their points deduction.

This year a study of players’ statistics has informed the skipper’s approach to the 26-match campaign.

“We know what we need to do,” he explained. “We may not have the batting to score the 3,800 runs we managed in 2007 but we have the bowling capability to surpass the 149 wickets we took.

“A key part of our strategy is to avoid draws and we relish playing under pressure. We can dig in and fight.”
