Liverpool peer Lord Rennard of Wavertree defends expenses

Yesterday he hit back while on the BBC’s Politics Show, saying the broadcaster, because it is publicly funded, should also publish expense receipts filed by staff.

Liverpool-born Culture Secretary Andy Burnham wrote a note to the fees office in which he pleaded for his expenses to be paid urgently and even wrote he “might be in line for a divorce” if the money did not materialise within days.

Gordon Brown was warned last night that dissolving parliament could be the only way to rescue MPs’ reputations amid the growing public anger.

Lord Naseby, who was deputy Commons Speaker between 1992-97, warned that a “fresh start” may be needed.

He said: “It’s dreadful. It is quite awful.

“I think frankly, if this runs and runs, then Parliament should be dissolved, I think they have to start again.”
