Union leader calls for government action over Vauxhall at Ellesmere Port

He added: “The financing concept for me is absolutely not convincing. In my opinion he (Mr Marchionne) is risking everything.”

At least seven other parties are understood to be interested in buying GM Europe, and Mr Woodley said he believes a Fiat takeover would be detrimental for GM’s UK workforce.

“If there are options, Fiat would not be the first one that anyone at GM Europe would vote for.

“I would be concerned that Fiat, who lost 400m Euros in the first quarter of this year, are capable of funding or running such a massive organisation as Fiat, Chrysler and GM Europe.”

Ellesmere Port employs 2,200 staff making the Astra.

Workers are on short-term working and have been offered sabbaticals due to falling orders.

But the plant will add a third shift in September when it begins production of the new Astra.
