Anfield included as Rugby World Cup bidding begins for 2015 tournament

ANFIELD has been included in an England bid to host the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Liverpool FC’s home ground was named alongside Manchester United's Old Trafford and Arsenal’s Emirates stadium in an attempt to bring the Rugby Union cup to England and Wales.

In a presentation to the International Rugby Board (IRB) Council in Dublin today, England's bid team outlined proposals to host the tournament back in Britain for the first time in 24 years.

The plans would see the biggest names in the game line up at Anfield.

Japan is thought to be among the favourites to host the competition, after Australia pulled out.

But the bid has the full support of Mersey-raised Secretary of State for Sport Andy Burnham.

His last visit to the stadium as part of the Hillsborough anniversary last month saw him greeted with boos from around the stadium.
