Anderson strikes but rain returns

James Anderson saw off Devon Smith at the top of the West Indies order before heavy rain interrupted England's progress on the third evening of the second npower Test.

The Riverside had dodged the showers while England were earlier turning 302 for two into 569 for six declared.

But once a hefty downfall arrived at the ground shortly after the West Indies accepted an offer to go off for bad light, prospects of further play quickly receded. The tourists were on 34 for one at the time, needing to somehow win a match already significantly shortened by bad weather if they are to salvage an unlikely series draw.

England spent the first two sessions consolidating first-day gains, effectively ensuring they will either win or draw this match - and therefore regain the Wisden Trophy.

The highlights among their 267 runs today, for the loss of four wickets before a teatime declaration, were Alastair Cook completing a career-best 160 and some fine strokeplay from Kevin Pietersen and then Matt Prior (63).

For the locals there was the bonus of an unbeaten 60 for Durham's own Paul Collingwood.
