Salt targets ‘impossible’ to hit

TOUGH Government targets over salt content of foods will be impossible to achieve, industry figures said.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) admitted its updated targets for 2012 were “extremely ambitious and challenging” but said that, while the UK was still leading the way in reducing salt content of foods, there was “clearly scope for some parts of the industry to do more”.

Reducing daily salt intake to 6g could prevent an average of 20,200 premature deaths a year, according to the agency.
