Sefton Council land deals stall as crunch hits

The sites have been “land-banked” until the market returns.

In a report to Sefton’s cabinet, Alan Moore, director of regeneration and environmental services in Sefton, says: “The economic downturn has had an adverse impact on land values and the number of asset disposals which will be taking place.

“Indeed, there are several disposals which were in train which will not now be proceeding.”

Other sales that have been crunched include the Rawson Road School, Seaforth, and the Pavilion Buildings, in Southport.

Cllr Peter Dowd, deputy leader of the council, said: “The fact that companies don’t have the capital to buy development property is an issue and that has had an effect on the council.

“It makes the capital programme a little bit more difficult – less flexible.”

But Cllr Dowd added that no new developments had been held back by the failure to secure the sale of the unwanted plots.
