Anyone for Arena tennis at Liverpool Echo Arena?

TICKETS go on sale this morning for the Great Britain Davis Cup tie against Poland at the Echo Arena Liverpool in September.

The AEGON GB Davis Cup team will be hoping to maintain their unblemished record against Poland, with Great Britain having won all of the previous seven matches.

Cllr Warren Bradley, leader of Liverpool City Council, last night spoke of how important the event – which takes place over September 18 - 21 – will be for the city.

He said: ''The Davis Cup is a truly special sporting event, and I've no doubt the people of Liverpool will help create an unbelievable atmosphere inside the Arena.

“Everyone who gets a ticket can expect an unforgettable occasion and will forever be part of this city's sporting history.''

Cllr Laurence Sidorczuk, whose father is Polish, added: ''Everyone I've spoken to in the Polish community are delighted this Davis Cup tie will be hosted in Liverpool, as they know the crowd atmosphere will be amazing.

“I'm delighted as it was only the other month we got to see English and Polish athletes compete in the European Badminton Championships at the Echo Arena. That was fantastic and this event will be another level altogether.'' John Lloyd, AEGON GB Davis Cup captain, added: “We’re hoping for a sell-out crowd at the Echo Arena and some passionate support to help the team win this crucial tie. Davis Cup is different to other tennis events, including Grand Slams.

“There is a different type of pressure on the players and the atmosphere is very important – we need it to be loud.

“The tie against Poland will be a tough test.”
