Liverpool FC ace Steven Gerrard in Cannes to support film by Knowsley actor Neil Fitzmaurice

STEVEN GERRARD swapped football for the world’s most famous film festival yesterday.

The Liverpool FC captain was spotted at Cannes – and it turned out he was on hand to support another son of Knowsley, actor and writer Neil Fitzmaurice.

Comedian Fitzmaurice has been in Cannes all week for two screenings of his long-awaited Charlie Noades RIP, the follow-up to 2000’s Going Off Big Time.

The film, made on a shoestring budget and shot entirely on location in Liverpool, was shown at the Palais cinema, the most famous in the French seaside resort.

It is thought Gerrard flew over to the film festival by private jet.

Charlie Noades RIP was filmed in a scrapyard in Prescot, and is about a group of people trying to make a living in a bygone industry.

It stars John Thompson, Liverpool’s Suzanne Collins and John McArdle, and Fitzmaurice’s Phoenix Nights compatriots Dave Spikey and Justin Moorhouse.
