Bid to smash rowing record

A FORMER SAS sergeant has launched a bid to raise funds for charity and smash the world record for crossing the North Atlantic unsupported in a rowing boat.

Peter Bray, 53, aims to raise £25,000 for the charity Help for Heroes, for its work with wounded members of the armed forces.

Mr Bray, who launches his attempt today, at Holyhead Marina, on Anglesey, North Wales, will follow his boat and fly to Newfoundland, Canada, for the start of his trip later this year.

The specially-adapted boat flies out this week.

Mr Bray, who lives in Holyhead, North Wales, said: “I’m really looking forward to the challenge, which will take me out of my comfort zone as a seasoned kayaker used to facing what’s coming and have me rowing seated the opposite way around.

“I’m raising money for Help For Heroes because we don’t look after the service people who come back from conflicts injured at all well.”
