Charity shop boom

THE recession has caused a “mini-boom” in Britain’s charity shop trade, according to a new survey.

One in ten thrifty Britons are buying more from charity outlets than before the recession, while one in five are donating more goods.

The study, conducted by YouGov for the charity insurer Ecclesiastical, found 13% of people turn to charity stores to help stretch their budgets.

Results suggest the economic downturn has also encouraged generosity, with 21% of the population donating more goods.

And women appear to be more giving than men.
