Merseyside Police officer disposed of phone

A MERSEYSIDE police officer was sacked after disposing of a mobile phone, instead of giving it back to its owner.

PC Peter Gannon was dismissed after a disciplinary panel found him guilty of “discreditable conduct”.

Last November, the constable of nearly seven years’ service found himself put on restricted duties.

An investigation was launched into an allegation he had, during a criminal investigation, disposed of a mobile phone instead of returning it to its rightful owner.

Depriving someone of their property is an offence of theft under the Theft Act 1968.

Gannon, 36, did not keep the phone himself but did not return it to the person he knew was the lawful keeper, the internal board found.

He was dismissed from the force in February.
