SENIOR rail chiefs played a mugs game during rush hour on the Wirral Line last night.
Directors from Merseyrail and Network Rail helped hand out thousands of stainless steel thermos mugs to passengers as a thank you for their patience during almost seven weeks of engineering work in a £3.4m scheme that shut the loop line.
Engineers replaced the concrete bed and re-laid track on the curved section of the underground loop which meant trains terminating at James Street. The loop re-opened yesterday.
Merseyrail managing director Bart Schmeink said: “I am pleased that the work on the Wirral loop line under the city centre has now finished exactly as scheduled.
“We wanted to thank our passengers for their patience so we are giving away thousands of stainless steel travel mugs with a voucher for a half-price coffee.
“They have had to put up with inconvenience so this small present acknowledges that their journeys to work have been more difficult."
