Conservative candidates meet party chairman at Wallasey town hall

TORY party national chairman Eric Pickles met with Conservative hopefuls in Wirral yesterday.

Mr Pickles also met with Wirral’s Conservative group leader Cllr Jeff Green and Tory councillors before campaigning in Wallasey.

His meeting with prospective Parliamentary candidates took place at Wallasey town hall.

The Conservatives are optimistic about gaining seats in the borough and are targeting Wirral South, Wirral West and Wallasey.

Following last week’s defection of Labour councillor Denis Knowles to the Conservatives, the party chairman also spent time delivering leaflets in his Seacombe ward, accompanied by Cllr Leah Fraser, who is fighting the Wallasey constituency.

Cllr Fraser said she wanted to use the opportunity to update Mr Pickles on the council’s plans to close 11 libraries in Wirral, which were opposed by the Tory group and are now to be subject to a public inquiry.

She said: “I was keen to update Mr Pickles on the libraries inquiry and the Strategic Asset Review, and show him the good progress we have been making here.”
