Everton FC scarf on the 'Dickie Lewis' _460
HE IS the cherished Liverpool landmark renowned as much for his lack of clothing as the famous old store he stands above.
But the Merseyside footballing allegiance of the 18ft Dickie Lewis statue, above Lewis’s department store, in Ranelagh Street, was unknown – until now.
For Dickie was spotted sporting an Everton scarf in support of the Goodison Park outfit’s involvement in the FA Cup final at Wembley tomorrow.
It was placed around the statue’s neck yesterday by Everton fan and PR supremo Tony Tighe, whose Merepark firm is behind the launch of the club’s new retail operation, including a store in Liverpool One.
Scarves were also placed on Queen Victoria, in Derby Square; Eleanor Rigby, outside Metquarter; Sir John Moores, in Old Hall Street; John Lennon, in Mathew Street; Disraeli, outside St George’s Hall; Dixie Dean, outside Goodison Park; and the Antony Gormley iron men statues, on Crosby beach.
Mr Tighe said: “They were all the special scarves made as part of Everton’s ‘Tell Me Ma’ campaign, and we decided to decorate all these famous city figures with one to get behind the Blues.
“Obviously, it was going to be a logistical dilemma getting one onto Dickie Lewis, because it must be 80ft high – but Lewis’s were absolutely fantastic with us and could not help enough.
