Griffin grew up in Warrington where, it is understood, he owned a collection of businesses.
It is understood he moved to the south coast eight years ago after the collapse of one business left him with large debts.
He was declared bankrupt at Warrington county court in 2006.
A family friend suggested to a national newspaper that the couple’s relationship was stormy.
They also said Griffin had fought a long battle with depression.
Last night, there were fears he may have taken his own life.A Cheshire police spokesman said: "We are aware the investigation may have links to the Cheshire area.
"We are making inquiries at premises linked to individuals within the case.
"Surrey police are making similar inquiries at an address in Surrey."
