He said: "Simon was a professional, highly respected and hard working officer who will be sadly missed by his colleagues and friends."

The tributes came as a fresh appeal for witnesses was made by Merseyside police in a bid to piece together what happened.

Officers are particularly keen for the drivers of two other cars, seen on the road at the time of the collision to come forward.

The first car is believed to be a dark coloured Audi A4 estate.

It was travelling ahead of the two cars involved before heading towards Queens Drive.

Police said the driver of that car may not have known a collision took place.

The second car was believed to be a black Mercedes, which police said pulled over at the time of the collision before continuing on its journey down Edge Lane.

A Merseyside police spokesman said: "We would appeal to the drivers of both cars to come forward."

Anyone with information should call 0151-777 5771 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
