GARSTON MP Maria Eagle was guest speaker at a Liverpool town hall event aimed at attracting more women from minority communities to get involved in politics.
It was one of a series of events organised by the black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) Women Councillors Taskforce, launched last year to address under-representation of women from these backgrounds as local councillors.
Also present at the free event were Liverpool council leader Warren Bradley, Cllr Anna Rothery, BAME Taskforce member Mia Jones, and aspiring councillor Amina Ismail, who is from the Somali community.
Ms Eagle, the deputy Minister for women and equality, said: “We need the voices, talents and skills of black, Asian and minority ethnic women on our local councils. But there are too few ethnic minority women in public life and our local communities are losing out.”
