Traffic on the Strand 300
THREE years of traffic misery on one of Liverpool’s busiest routes is coming to an end.
The final traffic cones will be removed today and tomorrow to bring an end road works on The Strand.
Last night council leader Warren Bradley praised the city’s motorists for their patience and said the work had been vital.
He could “never say never” that more works would be needed but the council was keen to avoid digging.
Labour leader Joe Anderson said: “I think most drivers that regularly use The Strand will be thrilled and delighted that it’s now complete and hope that there are no more disruptions.”
Work on The Strand started in July 2006 when diggers moved in to create two huge ramps in the middle of the road so traffic could reach the new 2,000-space car park underneath Chavasse Park for the Liverpool One shopping centre.
It also involved improving the road layout, installing new pavements and safer pedestrian crossings, and better lighting.
At times it has led to heavy traffic jams and some long delays.
