Sefton Council services may be cut after £10million budget black hole is revealed

A SWATHE of services could be axed by Sefton Council after a £10m black hole was discovered in its finances.

Council bosses have ordered a root and branch review to highlight where savings could be made.

Margaret Carney, who took over as Sefton’s chief executive in January, said some of the options could be "politically sensitive".

To deliver savings on this scale, Mrs Carney warned, is unlikely to be achieved without affecting the number of staff Sefton employs. They will also have to be delivered rapidly.

The budget review comes less than six months after Sefton privatised its finance and technical services departments.

The Major Services Review saw hundreds of staff transferred to working for Arvato and Capita Symonds to supposedly save £1m a year.

Now staff representatives are disputing that figure.

They have also vowed to fight against any compulsory job losses.
