It’s time for action, city Lib-Dem leader tellsDavid Bartlett
LIVERPOOL Council leader Warren Bradley last night launched an astonishing attack on “complacent” and “apathetic” Liberal Democrats.
In an exclusive interview with the Daily Post he hit out at widely-held views that his party’s 11-year control of Liverpool Council would be surrendered next year.
He issued a call to arms to his 46 councillors saying: “If you work hard over the next 12 months I see no reason why our record of turning Liverpool around will not see us re-elected.”
But he hit out at “complacency” that has seen the Lib-Dems lose 13 seats since 2004, to leave them with 46 and a majority of just one.
He said: “The Lib-Dems became complacent.
“Some apathetic councillors didn’t have the fire in their belly or the experience to stand up and fight back – they didn’t have a record of action.”
Cllr Bradley believes that the Liberal Democrats’ record in the past 11 years still stands them in good stead with the electorate.
He said: “If you look our record speaks volumes for what we have done, we said we would make Liverpool a completely different place to live and we have done that.
“We have delivered on education. We said we would keep council tax low, as the one single driver that made people leave the city, and we have delivered on that.
“I get so frustrated when people say we are going to get done because, because, because...
“Some of ours lost seats because the people that elect them felt like they didn’t represent them any more.
“Labour and the Greens have made inroads because they worked harder.
“At the end of the day people want to be able to rely on the local councillors that represent them. Some of the people who were elected have let the people that elected them down.
“If you work hard in your community you will not lose.”
