Wirral’s sevent Kite Festival takes to the skies
Other international kite flyers attending include Bas Vreeswijk, Iqbal Husain, Ludovico Bertozzi, Wolfgang Shimmelpfennig, Godfrey Gamble and Anna and Diety Gispen.
Home-grown UK talent included, world class stunt flyers Carl and James Robertshaw, and Andrew and Kathleen Beattie with their collection of spectacular display kites.
Also in attendance was Kelvin Woods who specialises in butterfly kites flown in groups to create a sea of colour and Mike Goddard’s eye-catching designs which also drew the crowds.
Chris Higgins, tourism events officer for Wirral Council, said: “It’s been challenging for the kite flyers but everyone has enjoyed themselves.
“We’ve had some really interesting kites including a pop art design and the big inflatables like teddies which are always popular. We’re lucky to have the world championship stunt flyers Carl and James Robertshaw who have been big draws for the amateur flyers.
“The control they have is amazing.
“People are here from all over the world, Italians, Germans, Canadians and the French.
“The kites are hand-made and the workmanship when you see them up close is fantastic.”
The Netherlands’ Bas Vreeswijk, attending with his wife Sara, added: “My kites are influenced by the roaring 20s. I travel all over the world with them.
“The appeal for me isn’t so much in the flying as the building.
“It has been a little bit gusty which made things hard to predict, but seeing so many kites from all over the world all flying at once is a great sight.”
