Campaigners plan to take fight against Knowsley incinerator to court

CAMPAIGNERS have revealed they want to take their fight against a planned incinerator near the village to court.

Residents in Knowsley village hope to apply for a judicial review following allegations Labour councillors were “ordered” to approve proposals for a £40m rubbish-burning plant.

The claim was made at a packed public meeting last week by lifetime Labour activist Bob Whiley, who lives in the village.

He claimed a senior politician admitted telling planning committee members to follow party orders at a training seminar for prospective Labour councillors.

At Friday’s meeting, residents voted to apply for judicial review at the High Court.

Mr Whiley said: “This politician stood up at the forum and said when Labour people come into the council, they should know when the group makes a decision, that is the way you vote.

“His next words were that four Labour committee members had letters sent to them telling them not to vote for what residents wanted.

“We have taken legal advice, which we will now take to the court in London.”

He blamed council leader Ron Round for “setting the agenda”.
