More than 100 anti BNP activists march through Liverpool in the protest at Nick Griffin’s shock election to the European Parliament

He said: “The worry is that wherever the BNP has been allowed in has seen racist acts increase and we can expect that here now.

“I think his victory will only embolden the argument that immigration is to blame and people who are suffering should turn on their neighbours.”

Chanting slogans and carrying placards, the protesters defied a police ban on any organised march and headed for the BBC buildings in Hanover Street.

Outside, fellow demonstration organiser Martin Timpson urged media outlets to blanket ban the far-right group and criticised the BBC for the coverage it gave to the BNP in the run-up to last week’s vote.
