Planning expert dismisses economic benefits of second Mersey bridge as “pie-in-the-sky”

Addressing Mr Wenban-Smith’s comments, he said: “We have quantified the benefits, which will overtake tolls by 2021.

“But those do not include journey times on the existing Silver Jubilee Bridge, which are unreliable.

“People will benefit from being able to cross the Mersey quickly and reliably, bringing benefits.”

He added: “The benefits to people on shopping trips are likely to be neutral, but for people going to the airport, or on business, the cost of tolls will be more affordable.”
