Ukulele players wanted to fill Albert Hall

UKULELE players of all standards are being urged to help take over the Royal Albert Hall for a special play-along concert.

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain (UOGB) is performing on August 18 as part of the BBC Proms season, and has asked concert-goers to bring their own ukuleles and join in as they play the Ode To Joy from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

As many as 3,000 fans could fill the famous hall with four-stringed strumming.

The UOGB has been entertaining crowds for more than 20 years with its unique renditions of familiar tunes including Jerusalem, the Dambusters theme, The Ride Of The Valkyries and even the Sex Pistols’ Anarchy In The UK.

George Hinchcliffe, director of the UOGB, said: “The BBC Proms are great for making music accessible, as is the ukulele, due to it being cheap and portable. Everyone can have a go.

“That is why we thought audience participation would be a great idea – that and the fact that we have always wanted to fill the whole of the Royal Albert Hall with ukulele players.”
