Balloons released in blood donors’ honour at Liverpool cathedral

BLOOD donors gathered at the Anglican cathedral for a balloon release in their honour.

The event was held as a thank you for donors who regularly give blood and to raise awareness of the current demand.

Organisers released 150 red balloons to signify the number of units of blood which are needed in Liverpool alone each day.

Among those attending was 16-month-old Jack Hayhoe, who has the rare Whiskott Aldrich Syndrome.

His condition has caused him to need 12 transfusions since birth of both blood and platelets – a specific component of blood.

His parents, Mandy and Ian, are active campaigners who encourage people to donate.
