Health Secretary Andy Burnham makes first official visit to Liverpool Women’s Hospital
NEW Health Secretary Andy Burnham praised staff at a Liverpool hospital, during his first official visit yesterday.
The Everton fan chatted to nurses and patients at Liverpool Women’s Hospital – but was briefly interrupted when his Z Cars mobile phone tone rang out from his pocket.
He said: “It has been a privilege to see the excellent maternity services at Liverpool Women’s Hospital today and to meet many of the staff who are providing safe, effective care to women during pregnancy and birth.
“The hospital is driving forward innovation in maternity services, with advanced skills and treatments for complex pregnancies and a planned research programme with the University of Liverpool to help better understand how we can decrease the numbers of emergency Caesarean sections and miscarriages. This will undoubtedly lead to improvements in care for women and babies.”
The visit coincided with a keynote speech at the NHS Confederation’s annual conference at Liverpool’s BT Convention Centre on the waterfront.
Dr Helen Scholefield, Clinical Director for Maternity Services said: “We are delighted to be able to showcase our services.”
