Doddy, 80, who arrived at the station wielding two tickling sticks, said: “This work of art of a comedian and Bessie Braddock should greet people as they arrive in Lime Street.
“Happiness is arriving in Liverpool, coming home again to the greatest city in the country, the greatest city in the world. Liverpool forever!
“The population is a wonderful mix, every creed, every religion, every colour.
“Bessie Braddock was a lovely lady. We used to meet every Monday when I was going to the Palladium and we would have many arguments about politics.
“But she loved Liverpool and she loved the people of Liverpool.”
The artwork, entitled Chance Meeting, features Doddy holding one of his famous tickling sticks, while “Battling” Bessie – MP for Liverpool Exchange for 25 years – is dressed in her trademark hat and carries an egg.
The fiery campaigner was the politician responsible for the Lion quality mark which shoppers find on all British eggs.
The statue was commissioned by Merseytravel as part of its commitment to public art around its network.
Merseytravel chief executive and director general Neil Scales said: “This is a permanent reminder of two great Liverpool icons.
“I know they will bring pleasure to millions of passengers who come through this station. It epitomises the true spirit of Liverpool.”
