Tour of Britain cycle race reaches Southport

THE world’s best cyclists swept into Merseyside last night in stage four of the Tour of Britain.

The sprint finish down Lord Street, Southport, came after a gruelling loop around Lancashire from Blackpool.

Spectators lined the streets for the evening event and many more were expected to tune in for the TV race highlights.

Cycle fans got to see the new format Tour Series in action.

The new set-up evolved from the popular Tour of Britain and sees teams of professional riders race through the town’s streets for one hour.

A series of junior races and family attractions were also put on.

Dave Marrin, Sefton’s cycling town project manager, said: “Although this is a new event, we have been able to draw on our recent experiences with the Open golf championship, the Grand National and Southport’s other major events.”
