Wirral Libraries Inquiry: Lib-Dem councillors face further disciplinary action in Wirral

A LIBERAL Democrat purge of “dissidents” within its ranks appeared to be threatening the stability of the party in Wirral last night.

Two councillors who were among those leading opposition to the council’s controversial library closure plans again face disciplinary action by the group.

Cllrs Phil Gilchrist and Pat Williams have been called for meetings with the local party hierarchy over their abstentions on a vote last month, which would have give the Tories control of the council. Cllr Gilcrhist is understood to have attended the meeting with a prepared statement, but Cllr Williams refused to attend a similar event, insisting she had not broken party rules.

The falling-out within the group originated from the proposal to shut Bromborough library, then the controversial decision to retain it, but close Eastham instead.

Several Lib-Dems have already faced disciplinary action over their opposition to the Strategic Asset Review (SAR), which recommended shutting 11 libraries.

A further meeting is expected to be held when the councillors will be told what their punishment is, although several Lib-Dems say they will not vote for further sanctions against them.
