Films featuring Liverpool collated into new online catalogue by university

LIVERPOOL’S appearances in more than a century of films have been collated into a new online catalogue.

Researchers at the University of Liverpool will launch the public database at its Victoria Museum & Gallery later today.

The resource includes information on footage shot from the late 19th-century to the present day, making it easier for film makers and historians to track it down.

The information is currently being used to create a digital map that will be included among the exhibits in the new Museum of Liverpool when it opens next year.

Dr Les Roberts, who worked on the two-year research project, said: "The idea was to bring all the archive material into one reference so people would be able to research different archives by going to just one website.

"It covers around than 1,700 titles including material held by private collectors and in public archives."

The database is part of the university’s City in Film project, which explores the relationship between Liverpool’s architecture and the moving image.

Researchers examined footage shot by film pioneers such as Mitchell & Kenyon in the early 20th century, as well as a range of amateur and independent films from the 1960s and 70s.
