AN UNOFFICIAL strike by 1,200 workers at an oil refinery in a row over jobs continued yesterday after talks aimed at breaking the deadlock broke down.
Contract staff at the Lindsey refinery, in Lincolnshire, stayed on strike and there are now fears action could spread to other sites.
The workers withdrew their labour last week in protest at a sub-contractor cutting 51 jobs while another employer on the site was hiring workers.
Urgent talks were held between union officials and contractors to try to resolve the dispute at the refinery, which was hit by unofficial action earlier this year in a row over the recruitment of non-UK workers.
The GMB union said it was now pressing the conciliation service Acas to attend a scheduled meeting between unions and employers today in a bid to resolve the dispute.
The striking workers went home and will return for another mass meeting this morning.
