Art prize for Liverpool John Moores Univeristy old boy Peter Monkman

A FORMER art student at John Moores University has gone on to win a top art prize.

Peter Monkman, 44, has collected £25,000 and a £4,000 commission for the National Portrait Gallery.

His chosen work, Changeling 2, is a series of oil paintings showing his 12-year-old daughter at different stages of her life.

Mr Monkman said: “I challenge the fixed notion of an idealised image of childhood and substitute it for a more unsettling, complex representation.”

Sandy Nairne, director of the National Portrait Gallery, said: “This is a superb, magical portrait – a very worthy winner for the Portrait Award.”
