Bernie Lubell’s first Uk exhibition opens T FACT
Instinctively based on the body and movements of the human body, his work also includes a giant coffin taking a “Freudian” look at creativity and life and death. Mr Lubell said: “I like this piece, it’s great to meditate inside and smell the pine.
“This piece started when my mother was ill and I phoned her, she was having trouble with her speech and I thought about how illness affected communication and how great the telephone was.
“You think there’s a person on the other end but you have no way of physically knowing that.
“When she died, I thought about how we want to talk beyond the grave and how you can’t communicate with the dead.”
His other elaborate creations include a “cheek to cheek” massage machine and a bench, Conservation of Intimacy, which forces pens to write when sat on.
Mr Lubell said: “My work is continually growing and evolving, and my mistakes often make the best parts.
“Pine breaks easily, it’s a really stupid idea to make things out of pine but I don’t get uptight about my work, I want visitors to experience it.”
The exhibition runs until September 6.
